What if the life you want is more possible than you think?
Positive What If statements open the door to greater possibilities.
They open our minds and expand our way of thinking.. They open us up to creative ideas, solutions, and new ways of viewing situations and life choices. They help broaden our vision, beyond the foundation of how the past has shaped our thoughts and expectations.
When we step into the mindset of possibilities, limitations begin to lift and anything feels possible... Options expand. The weight of our expectations becomes lighter. And new ideas appear to enhance the creative experience.
When we ask What if…? we transform our perspective and loosen our judgments. Our world becomes a more magical experience of life, where many roads can be taken to arrive at the same destination. Choices abound.
Complete this statement:
What if it were possible to… ?
Now, write it down or say it out loud. Then feel it. Feel those possibilities in your body.
Last year, during a vacation, I began each morning by writing a series of What If statements... ten a day. Recently, I sat down and reread what I had written. It felt empowering to revisit the lists.
Here are just a few:
What if our past experiences do not dictate our present experiences? What if those two are totally disconnected?
What if everything I can dream and imagine is really within arm’s reach?
What if everything works out for me today?
Reading them all again reminded me of the power of these type of statements and how easily they can create a positive shift in mindset. What our human minds often do, instead, is to create what if thoughts based on fear and limitation rather than positive possibilities.
Suggestion:
Uplift and inspire yourself with positive What If statements. What if you wrote 10 of them today? 20?
Besides the What If statements created to expand our thinking, there are those that show up out of curiosity and exploration. I'm now thinking... Where would I be if I never listened to the What if's that have shown up in my art process over the years?
Here are some of the statements that have impacted my art and my life:
What if I cut a hole in the canvas? I wonder what would happen.
What if I play with the raw canvas and use it as an element in my paintings?
What if I create books, scrolls, and windows with that raw canvas?
What if I create a textured background with the mulberry bark paper I have stored away for years?
What are some of the impactful experiences you've had that were fueled by a What If willingness to "try it" curiosity?

I share more about this practice in How to Say Yes When Your Mind is Telling You No, along with other tools for moving beyond hesitation, fear, and limiting thoughts.
